Seven Ways To Conquer Holiday Weight Gain

The time of year that most of us either love or hate is right around the corner! That’s right, it’s Holiday Season! While most of us are staunchly either pro-holiday season (guilty!) or anti-holiday season, there is typically one truth which applies to everyone, Holidays=Weight Gain.

For the next month and a half, we are going to be bombarded by all of our favorite foods, most of which are pretty unhealthy. With Christmas advertising starting earlier and earlier every year you can already smell the nutmeg and cinnamon in the air! Add in any traveling, and we get the perfect storm of sedentary lifestyle and poor nutrition leading straight to an unwanted jump on the scale.

So what can you do to avoid, or at least mitigate, putting on the extra pounds? Here’s six tips for you:

  1. Think About What You’re Eating
    It may sound simple and even a little silly, but oftentimes if you think about what you’re about to eat and the effects it will have on you, you’ll make better food choices. So before that fudge “magically” appears in your hand and begins it’s ascent to your mouth, THINK. Ask yourself a few questions: “Is this going to affect my workout later?” “In 10 minutes will I be happy I ate this?” “How many burpees is this worth?”
  1. Eat Your Vegetables First
    When you’re about to hammer through that big Thanksgiving meal, load your plate up with vegetables and force yourself to chow down on them before all the other deliciousness before you. This will ensure that you get your healthy greens in, and will help you get a little fuller faster. Which means less room for grandma’s pie!
  1. Remember Your Goals
    If you’re like most people you set some weight loss goals at the beginning of the year. Hopefully you have met some, if not all, of them. If you have met your goals, think of how hard you worked throughout the year to get there. Weight loss can be a long process, and we don’t want to undo the hard work in the last couple of months. If you haven’t met your initial 2018 goals don’t use that as an excuse to put things off until next January. Instead, see this final month and a half as a challenge to set yourself up for next year. We’re about to go through the hardest part of the year to eat healthy, so if you can make it through these 45 days you can make it through any part of next year!
  1. Have a Glass of Water Between Alcoholic Beverages
    Not only will drinking water between having alcoholic drinks mitigate hangover effects, it will help you consume less alcohol overall. Having an 8oz glass of water after a 12oz beer makes that next beer seem less alluring. Plus, your stomach will be a little fuller so the next beer will take longer to drink anyway.
  1. Don’t Buy in Bulk
    It’s Christmas and you’re having family over, so you need to get a TON of candy for everyone right? Well, no. That 12lb bag of snickers most likely isn’t going to be eaten in one day no matter how many nieces and nephews are stopping by. Then you’re stuck with half a bag of candy you really don’t want nor need around. It can be tough to throw away that much of anything, so do yourself a favor and opt for less.
  1. Remember They Are Holi-DAYS, not Holi-MONTHS
    Thanksgiving is a DAY. Christmas is a DAY. The season may be for a month, but make it a point to indulge only on the DAY. It’s easy to fall in the trap of grabbing an extra piece of chocolate or a cookie here and there in the name of the season, but next thing you know you’ll have had extra chocolate/cookies every single day for over a month. The scale probably won’t be too kind when all is said and done, and it can be disheartening to have it move in the wrong direction.
  1. Stay Active
    Through all of the next month and a half, it is absolutely important to keep your activity level high. Find reasons to get up and move rather than stay in one place. The more you move, the better you will feel, and if you feel better, you’ll be less likely to indulge!
